Hardwire kit vs OBD cable vs the lighter socket

Use the lighter socket if you only want video while driving. Use the maker's hardwire kit if you want parking mode. An OBD cable is the plug-in shortcut, but only use one made by your camera's brand for your model. All four cameras on this site say parking mode needs their hardwire kit, and none of the four listings we read mentions an OBD cable.

Lighter socket
This is the cable that comes with every camera here. In most cars the socket turns off with the engine, so the camera does too. That means no parking mode, and no chance of a drained battery. For a lot of drivers that is the right trade. You can still hide the wire so it looks built in.
Hardwire kit
A hardwire kit runs from the fuse box to the camera. It gives the camera power with the car off, and it watches the battery. When the voltage drops to the level you set, it cuts the camera off so the car still starts. The VIOFO listing names its kit, the HK4, and says it is sold separately. ROVE and REDTIGER say the same about theirs. Buy the kit made for your exact model. The plugs and the parking mode signal differ between brands.
OBD cable
An OBD cable plugs into the diagnostic port under the dash, which has power all the time in most cars. No fuses to tap. The drawbacks:
- Only some brands make one, and a generic cable may power the camera without ever telling it to switch to parking mode.
- Not every OBD cable has a low-voltage cutoff. Without one, the camera can run the battery flat.
- The port is shared with the car's own computers. If the car shows odd warnings or the battery drops after you add one, unplug it.
- Your mechanic, an emissions test or an insurance plug-in needs that port too.
Which we'd choose
- Garage at home, lot at work: lighter socket. Done.
- Street parking: the maker's hardwire kit, with the cutoff set on the high side. See does a dash cam drain the battery.
- Leased car, or you will not touch a fuse box: pay a car audio shop to fit the hardwire kit. It comes out cleanly when the lease ends.
